Say What?!?!?!?
We are back to baking after sickness, vacations, and girl scout cookie sales taking up our weekend baking time. This time we decided to tackle recipes we aren't really sure how to pronounce, in fact we had to google the cookies we were baking just to see origins and to see if there were different directions on some of the recipes. We made 3 different types of cookies, Sandkaehyis, Hamantaschen, and Speculaajes. The first cookie we made Sandkaehyis, are a danish butter cookie, they reminded us of the Danish cookies you get out of the tins around Christmas time, but much better since they were homemade. The second cookies we baked were Hamantaschen, a jewish triangle cookie originally filled with poppy seeds, but often filled with jams or chocolate,We did both chocolate and jam. Grandma's original recipe said to make a figure 8 shape and no where in the directions did it say where to put the jam or chocolate in the dough, so we did some research and found that they were not a figure 8 at all, they were to be made into little triangle pockets with filling. The 3rd and final cookie we made were Speculaajes, a Dutch cookie filled with lots spices. these cookies when bought from a store are usually in the shape of windmills. It was rather appropriate that we made these cookies today on April 5th, because today would have been our Grandpa Blaauw's Birthday, and he was originally from Holland.
