Our Favorites - Michelle

M&M Cookies

When Rosanna and I talked about doing our favorite recipes for our first entry I thought to myself "How in the world will I decide, there are so many!!"

The one recipe I have the most memories of her making are her Chocolate Chip Cookies. I remember countless attempts of Rosanna and I trying to steal cookie dough to eat and Grandma telling us "Stop eating the dough!" followed by a slap on the hand with a wooden spoon. Later in life when she made the cookies at our house she started putting cookie dough aside for us girls to enjoy. I remember when making these cookies she would always go a little light on the chocolate chips. One time Grandpa Blaauw and I had a brilliant idea to add more chocolate while Grandmas back was turned, only to be scolded for putting to many in there.

Grandma always had her way of doing her recipes and who were we to mess with them.
Grandma would often take a recipe she found and tweak them to her liking. Her chocolate chip cookie recipe was actually one of those many recipes she put her own spin on. The original  recipe was actually an M&M Party cookie that she had replaced the M&M's with chocolate chips because they were cheaper. she would still add M&M's to the tops of the cookies. My mom said she put them on top so you would not get the chocolate chip cookie mixed up with her oatmeal raisin cookies.

Below is the Original M&M Party cookie recipe, but we made them the way Grandma did:
M & M Party Cookies
1 c Brown sugar
½ c sugar
½ c shortening
½ c butter
2 eggs
1 ½ tes. Vanilla
2 ¼ c flour
1 tes. Baking soda
1 ½ tes. Salt
1 ½ c M&M’s or chocolate chips

Cream sugars, shortening, butter and eggs. Add vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients and mix well.

Add M&M or chips. Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 10 to 12 minutes.
